Meet The Mentors
A number of former FPU students who were in my IC101 classes in past years have agreed to be part of our class blog and chime in from time to time to talk about their experiences at FPU and afterwards and offer their thoughts and advice and even cautionary tales to you new students. This posting will give them a chance to introduce themselves and reminisce a bit about their first fews days at Franklin Pierce.

Hi, my name is Jessica Murante and I graduated FPC, now FPU, in 2004. I basically had my bags packed to move to NH from PA the moment I graduated high school; I was that excited!
ReplyDeleteMy 1st day was just as exciting as I thought iwould be, and I don't think my family was too happy that I barely said good bye to them on the manor lawn :) However, the people I met that day I still keep in touch with!
I majored in English with a concentration in Writing...had Dr. D many times and even worked for her in the Writing center. She's a wonderful, wonderful lady-no worries! After graduation I went on to get my Master's in Writing at Rowan University in NJ, with aspirations of becoming a famous writer, however, ended up in MD teaching! Guess life never really goes as planned.
But good luck to you all this semester. You'll all do great!
Hello all! My name is Ronald Harvey. Class of 2004.
ReplyDeleteI grew up a Westcoast kid and loved every minute of it. Although the sunshine and the lovely beaches kept me entertained it couldn't keep me forever. After highschool I decided to explore my horizons, flipped the coin and it landed in New Hampshire. Good ole' Franklin Pierce College-then.
(The best years of my life)
As a student I was in the midist of the "BEEEEZZZ-NNNNEEEEEEESSS" crowd. I Dabbled in every corner of the campus from, Graphic Design, English Lit, glassblowing, also did some recreational basketball, worked in the bookstore, Co-host to WFPC thursday 6-8pm, oooh boy the list is neverending....
enough about me.. Welcome!
signing out.
Hey everyone! My name is Lynsey Reiss and I was a member of the last graduating class of "FPC" in 2007. I am originally from PA and fell in love with the beauty of FPC's campus. I majored in English and Secondary Education and I am currently teaching at a middle school in South Carolina, where I have lived since the fall of 2007.
ReplyDeleteMy time spent at FPC was the best time of my life. So many of the friends I have made became the best friends I ever had and we still keep in touch. I had Dr. D every semester and there wasn't a class of her's that I did not enjoy! She is absolutel wonderful and will help you with anything! I couldn't have asked for a better advisor!
Welcome to FPU!
Hey Everyone,
ReplyDeleteI'm Nicole "Nikki" Buchholz. I graduated this spring, 2009, with a BA in Mass Communications and a minor in English. I had Dr.D. for many of my classes and learned a lot from her. I was also a 4 year letter, awar-winning Volleyball player and involved in several clubs through-out campus.
The time management part of the process takes a toll on ya but if you stick with it, it really preps you for every other step of life. I couldn't possibly imagine my 4 undergrad years spent anywhere other than Pierce.
I'm now a Graduate Assistant at East Stroudsburg University, PA, getting my Masters in Sports and Recreational Management. (Your undergrad CAN have absolutely nothing to do with your final job, just do what you love and are good at...figure the rest out later.) My aspirations in life are to become a DII coach for Volleyball somewhere in the nation.
Welcome to FPU. Be nice to C.S. and have a great time getting to know the Geese.
Hello freshman! My name is Sarah von Colditz. I am from the west coast, and made the trek out east because I wanted to get away from the security I had at home and really grow as a person. I graduated in 2004 along with Ron Harvey. While at Pierce I was on the Women's Soccer Team and was part of the Community Service club, both for all four years. I graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Social work and Counseling. I am currently working as a social worker for the State of Massachusetts, but not for long. On September 5th I'm moving back to Oregon for graduate school. I will be studying Social Work and Counseling.
ReplyDeleteWhile I was a student at Pierce I obtained a work study job for Dr. D working along side Ron. Dr. D is by far the best professor I had while at school. I wish I could have had her for all of my classes.
One piece of advice I can offer you right off the spot would be to just be yourself and give everyone a chance. I can remember the first day I walked into IC101 and sat down in between Ron and Jimmy Hunt and they started doing "the Carlton" and singing "it's not unusual" to me. It was straight out of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I was mortified, but those two opened up to me right off the bat, and showed me that they were confident guys. All three of us are still great friends 9 years later.
Good Luck, and I will be checking in throughout the course!
Hi Everyone,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to FPU!
I'm Alexis Kirk. I'm from Connecticut originally, and am currently living two towns over from where I grew up. I work for a small trading firm, where I've been for just over two years. Prior to this, I was working a similar job [in equity stocks] at UBS Investment Bank. Oddly enough, I graduated in 2004 with a BA in English Lit [and I minored in Philosophy]. I was also a member of Sigma Tau Delta [English Honor Society] and an employee in the Writing Center. Dr. D was not only my professor for the majority of my classes, but she was also my advisor, my boss, and ran Sigma Tau Delta - in other words, we spent quite a bit of time together, and I can honestly say you are in such great hands! Not only is she an excellent professor, but she is an amazing person, with a great heart for teaching and for her students. You are all so lucky to have her.
I loved Franklin Pierce and made such great friends there, who with I am still very close. With the campus community being so friendly and welcoming, the classes being so personal, and the professors being so knowlegeable and approachable, I can't think of a better college experience.
My only piece of advice is to be open to everything and everyone. You'd be amazed how much you learn about the people you meet, the things you get involved in, and yourself.
Hopefully, you all will have as enjoyable a time at Franklin Pierce, as I did.
Good luck and have fun!
Hello, my name is Frank Seijas, 24, of Whittier, California. I graduated in May 2008 from Franklin Pierce as a Mass Comm major with a self-designed concentration in Broadcast performance and received a Global Citizenship Certificate.
ReplyDeleteBefore going to school in cozy little Rindge, I had never been on the East Coast, and coming from CA., well New England is very different. Nevertheless, my experiences as a new student at Franklin Pierce were very exciting and memorable. I still remember our freshman orientation very well, especially the cardboard boat regatta and the entertainers like the "Sex Rules!" lady, for she made my friend put a condom over his head. That first week was full of meeting great new people and getting acquainted with what Rindge had to offer to the students...like Wal-Mart and??, well you'll see. Yet, more than anything, I can't forget the extremely welcoming feeling that I received from the Franklin Pierce community, which is why I knew that I had made a great decision at attending Franklin Pierce.
While at Franklin Pierce, I participated in C.A.B. (Campus Activities Board), the International Club, had a radio show, was on the the Men's Crew Team, participated in intramurals, was a Peer Leader, at times did the weather, arts and entertainment and anchor for the FPTV25 news, and much more. I really think that as a student you must look into what your campus has to offer and pick and choose wisely what is well worth participating in and doing as a student to make your Franklin Pierce experience as memorable and positive as possible. So please try to keep your eyes and ears open to all of the great events that the activities board and other campus organizations have to offer, and definitely don't be shy to give them a try. This is important even more because Franklin Pierce gives you many opportunities as a freshman that other institutes don't even let you step near til you're at least a Junior like: acting in the Fall production in your first semester, having a radio show, create your own t.v. show, or go on cool trips to amusement parks or really inexpensive concerts.
For those of you interested, do look into designing your own concentration or even your own major, because it really is easier than you think and well worth it. Also, always make sure to keep a good relationship with your professors and staff, especially your advisor, for they can really help when you are in a bind, and sometimes will even go out of their way to invite you to their homes for a home-cooked meal.
More than anything however, two things I will never forget about are: going on The Walk 05' and studying abroad at the Umbra Institute in Perugia Italy in Spring 2007. It's pretty great to be able to go abroad for a semester, but to be able to go abroad twice in a 4-year college timeframe is great! Franklin Pierce and my advisor (Dr. Phyllis Zrzavy)helped me make it possible and I really thank them for not only allowing me the great on-campus experiences, but also the abroad adventures that I had.
I now work as a teacher for an after school enrichment program at an elementary school here in my hometown of Whittier, as I await a hopeful 2-year experience with the Peace Corps. Nevertheless, I continue to try and set-up interviews with T.V. networks and marketing/advertising firms.
Well I hope that sharing my experiences helps you guys out. Oh and, please network as much as you can, even now as your college career begins, because it is never too early, and it really helps.
-Frank
